How does a silt fence control soil erosion?
-
A silt fence is a temporary sediment-control barrier designed to reduce the movement of loose soil, mud, and sediment from disturbed land into nearby drains, waterways, roads, and surrounding properties. It is commonly installed around construction sites, excavation zones, landscaping projects, roadwork areas, and locations where soil has been exposed or recently disturbed. Although the structure looks simple, its proper placement and installation can significantly improve site cleanliness and environmental protection. The fence generally consists of a permeable geotextile fabric supported by stakes, allowing water to pass through while slowing down sediment-laden runoff. Instead of completely stopping flowing water, the barrier reduces its velocity and gives suspended soil particles an opportunity to settle on the uphill side.
